ZXTM Desktop Evaluator Installation Instructions

This article explains how to install and run the ZXTM Desktop Evaluator, the instructions apply to both versions. If you haven't installed your virtualization software and downloaded the ZXTM Desktop Evaluator, please follow the instructions in Download the ZXTM Desktop Evaluator.

Start the ZXTM Desktop Evaluator

With VMware Player:

Launch VMware Player. In the dialog box 'Browse for Virtual Machine Configuration File', browse to the directory created when you extracted the zip file, select 'ZXTM Desktop Evaluator' and open it. ZXTM Desktop Evaluator starts up. This may take several minutes.

With VMware Server:

Launch VMware Server. Use 'File → Open...', and click 'Browse...'. Browse to the directory created when you extracted the zip file, select 'ZXTM Desktop Evaluator' and open it. Start this virtual machine; this may take several minutes.

With Microsoft Virtual Server:

Access the Virtual Server Administration Web Site using Internet Explorer. In the 'Virtual Machines' control, click 'Create'. Use the following settings:

  • Virtual Machine name: ZXTM Desktop Evaluator
  • Memory: Use 128MB minimum, 256MB recommended
  • Virtual Hard Disk: Select 'Use an existing virtual hard disk'. Enter the full path to the ZXTM Desktop Evaluator.vhd file that was extracted from the zip file. The Bus type should be 'IDE'.
  • Virtual network adapter: Connect this to an active network adapter on your machine; this network must be running a DHCP server.

Click the 'Create' button. Then, go to the 'Master Status' and start your new Virtual Machine. Click on the 'Remote View' icon to observe ZXTM Desktop Evaluator starting up.

ZXTM Desktop Evaluator is now ready

The first time that you start the Desktop Edition up, you will be shown a license agreement. Click on the console window and press 'return' to page through the agreement; type 'yes' if you agree to its terms.

Note: the console window will take mouse focus; to release it, press 'Ctrl-Alt' in VMware or the right 'Alt' key in Microsoft Virtual Server.

Take a note of the URL for the admin interface. It will be displayed in the console window like this:

You can now minimize the VMware Player or VMware Server window, or leave the Virtual Server website.

Access the Admin interface using a web browser, and log in using the username 'admin', password 'admin':

Obtaining a license key

The Administration Interface will prompt you to upload a license key for the ZXTM software. Proceed to get a free license key to download and install a key.
