Healthcode deploys Zeus to expand secure medical insurance services

Healthcode, the UK's largest private medical insurance bills clearing house, has deployed ZXTM to manage its web traffic. This will increase resiliency of its secure custom web application, VEDA, which will process over two million invoices in 2004.

Zeus Technology, the acknowledged leader in Internet infrastructure solutions, today announced that Healthcode, the UK's largest private medical insurance bills clearing house, has deployed Zeus Extensible Traffic Manager (ZXTM) to manage its web traffic. This will increase resiliency of its secure custom web application, VEDA, which will process over two million invoices in 2004, as well as enabling the introduction of new services such as secure messaging and patient tracing.

Healthcode is jointly owned by BUPA, Norwich Union, Nuffield Hospitals, AXA PPP Healthcare, First Assist and Standard Life Healthcare. Its web-based services provide the vital interface between hospitals' consultants and medical insurers, with the aim of both driving down the administrative costs associated with private medical insurance claims and making the overall process seamless.

As well as claims processing, Healthcode is using ZXTM to support its expanded range of e-commerce services related to the medical and insurance markets. These include secure messaging, providing secure, confidential communication; Healthcode Trace and Membership Lookup, enabling providers to quickly trace the insurance records of patients and its Specialist Billing Service, which allows consultants to submit claims online.

With demand for its claims and secure billing services increasing in line with market share, Healthcode required a simple way to scale up both the performance and capacity of its existing systems and to create a resilient application cluster, without any disruption to services.

Upgrading its existing load balancing solution enabled Healthcode to take advantage of ZXTM's enhanced features and performance. Native SSL support meant Healthcode could offload SSL decryption from its application servers to ZXTM, significantly reducing processing load and allowing Healthcode to handle more transactions with the extra capacity now available.

"ZXTM is the only solution which has been able to fulfil our requirements for a stable, expandable and secure load balancing solution at a reasonable cost," commented Julian Russell, Healthcode's Operations Manager. "Of all the products we considered, only Zeus have been able to provide us with reliable session persistence for our users in combination with security, stability and resilience that we demand from our services."

"Healthcode operates a number of web applications that are hosted from a single website," commented Steve Palmer, VP Marketing at Zeus, "The addition of ZXTM into Healthcode's J2EE application infrastructure has given them a stable foundation on which existing services can be expanded and new services can be built."
