ASPs typically need to ensure that each aspect of their service is tightly integrated with the rest, whilst also being sufficiently modular that new components can be added to enhance the value to their customers without causing major service disruption.

Application awareness in the traffic manager is of particular use to ASPs because it can make the task of joining-up all the components of their hosted services that much easier. If the traffic manager can also help ASPs enhance the overall user experience by intercepting application errors and taking suitable actions to rectify the problem, this would provide significant benefits. Service level monitoring and bandwidth management would also be of use to ASPs providing different tiers of service to differing groups of customer.

The challenge

Zoto needed a traffic management and load balancing solution tightly integrated with their photo serving application which would inspect searches and retrieve the photo required from the correct server. Hardware-only solutions were of little use as they required the traffic manager to run alongside their application on the same server.

The solution

By deploying ZXTM as software, Zoto have been able to integrate it tightly with their applications using TrafficScript™. In doing so, they have removed the need for an expensive SAN deployment.

The payback

Zoto's team have realized that many application development issues are resolved more simply and quickly in TrafficScript™ than by altering the application itself.
